How to create a QR menu: a step-by-step setup guide
There are two ways to make a QR menu: point a QR code at a PDF of your menu, or set up a working menu system. The first takes an afternoon and stays exactly where you left it; the second takes the same afternoon but goes on taking orders, translating languages and updating itself. This guide covers the second.
Step by step: from zero to live
- 1Set up your categories — don't copy your paper menu; arrange it in the order guests actually search (starters up front, today's menu at the top).
- 2Enter your products or import them from the POS — if you already have a POS menu, the import wizard maps categories and options automatically.
- 3Add photos — put real photographs on your 20 best sellers; items with photos go into the basket at a markedly higher rate.
- 4Tag allergens and ingredients — label the 14 EU standard allergens per item, so guests filter for themselves instead of asking the server.
- 5Switch on translation — AI translation renders the menu into every supported language; approve the translations in the dashboard before going live.
- 6Generate and print the table QRs — one code per table, so every order announces which table it came from.
- 7Place a test order — scan it with your phone, fill a basket, and watch the order land on the POS and in the kitchen. Then you're live.
Why a PDF menu isn't enough
A PDF is a photograph: when a price changes it has to be re-uploaded, it speaks no languages, it cannot take an order, and it demands pinch-and-zoom gymnastics on a phone. With a real QR menu you change the price in the dashboard and the guest at the table sees the new one that same second; you mark an item sold out and it drops off the menu instantly; you schedule a promotion and it switches itself on when the hour arrives.
From menu to ordering: this is the real difference
There is a revenue gap between a QR that shows the menu and steps aside, and a QR where the guest builds a basket and sends the order.
